Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, is an American artist and rapper. Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper as well as a singer. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, NJ. Her parents are Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Their divorce occurred when Latifah was ten. Latifah grew up within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah is her name for stage when she turned eight. It means very sensitive in Arabic. Always a tall girl at 5'10, Latifah was a forward on her basketball team in high school. The number she sang was home from The musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah started beatboxing in the fresh rap ladies. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were joined by the producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created an audition for the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps is Freddy. The song got the attention from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who has signed Latifah and in 1988 issued her first track Wrath of My Madness.
